Who is Mama Cocha? In Inca mythology, Mama Cocha was the goddess of all waters.

She was called "Mother of the Waters" because she represented the sea and its tides, lakes, rivers, and water sources, while the springs were her children. She was also the wife of Viracocha, the supreme god, and mother of the sun and moon, Inti, and Mama Quilla. Mythology of Mama Cocha The cult of Mama Cocha spread throughout much of South America. She was revered from present-day Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia to northern Chile, where fishing is essential for life, and Mama Cocha provided for it. She also protected them from tsunamis and storms.

Mama Cocha represented all that was feminine and similarly brought balance to the world. She was also often identified with the rainwater that falls to fertilize the earth. Mama Cocha inhabited the "upper world," known as Hanan Pacha, where she lived alongside Viracocha, Inti, Mama Quilla, other gods, and the righteous, worthy of being with the gods.

Mama Cocha's story an ancient Inca legend tells of areas where the influence of the other gods had not yet reached: Mama Cocha was the daughter of the sun and the moon, and sister of Inca, the first son of the sun and the moon. She was a pale and beautiful young woman sent from heaven to earth to teach humanity how to live and work in peace and love. Upon her arrival, the people recognized her as their protective mother, and under her guidance and that of Inca, they built houses and roads, temples and fortresses. Thus, they tilled the land, which soon bore fruit and made the Inca empire strong again. Mama Cocha's Appearance Physically, Mama Cocha was represented as a pale and beautiful young woman; however, she was believed to be the essence that inhabits everybody of water, from raindrops to the immense sea. Mama Cocha's Powers This goddess has power over the seas, rivers, and lakes; she controls rain and drought, can stir or calm the waters. She was also a provider, nourishing the crops and providing food through marine animals.
